Buying health insurance on your own?

We'll make sense of it with you.

On or off the Marketplace, HMO or PPO, Bronze or Gold. We compare your options side by side, check whether you qualify for savings, and help you choose a plan that fits your doctors and your budget.

We help people who are

Sound Familiar?

Shopping for a plan

shouldn't feel like a test.

Most people pick a plan based on the monthly premium alone, then find out what it really costs when they need care.

The problem

HMO, PPO, EPO, deductibles, coinsurance. It all blurs together.

How we fix it

Plain-language explanations and a side-by-side comparison of the plans that actually fit you.

The problem

You're not sure if you qualify for help paying premiums.

How we fix it

We check your eligibility for premium tax credits and cost-sharing savings before you choose.

The problem

You found an affordable plan, but your doctor isn't in it.

How we fix it

We confirm your doctors, hospitals and prescriptions are covered before you enroll.

The problem

You have a claim or billing question and no one to call.

How we fix it

You get a real person at MAR all year, not just during open enrollment.

On or Off the Marketplace

Two ways to buy.

We compare both for you.

On the Marketplace

Through HealthCare.gov

The federal Marketplace is the only place to get help paying your premiums, based on your household income.

Often best if your income qualifies you for savings.
See if you qualify for savings →

Off the Marketplace

Directly with the carrier

The same kinds of ACA-compliant plans, bought straight from the insurance company, sometimes with different plan or network choices.

Often best if your income is above the savings range, or you want a specific network.

Using MAR costs you nothing extra. The premium is the same whether you enroll on your own or with us.

Plan Types Explained

HMO, PPO, EPO?

Here's what the letters mean.

The plan type decides which doctors you can see and how you get to specialists. Here’s how they compare.

HMO

Health Maintenance Organization

You choose a primary care doctor who coordinates your care and refers you to specialists, all within the plan’s network.

Premiums

Usually lower

Referrals

Required

Out of network

Emergencies only

Good fit if

You want lower costs and don't mind a set network.

PPO

Preferred Provider Organization

See any doctor or specialist without a referral. Staying in network costs less, but out-of-network care is still covered.

Premiums

Usually higher

Referrals

Not needed

Out of network

Covered, costs more

Good fit if

You want the most freedom to choose doctors.

EPO

Exclusive Provider Organization

No referrals needed to see specialists, but you must stay within the plan’s network except for emergencies.

Premiums

Moderate

Referrals

Not needed

Out of network

Emergencies only

Good fit if

Your doctors are in network and you want to skip referrals.

POS

Point of Service

A mix of HMO and PPO. You have a primary care doctor and referrals, with some coverage outside the network.

Premiums

Moderate

Referrals

Usually required

Out of network

Covered, costs more

Good fit if

You want a coordinator but some flexibility too.

HDHP

High-Deductible Plan with HSA

A lower premium and a higher deductible, paired with a Health Savings Account you fund with pre-tax dollars.

Premiums

Usually lowest

Tax savings

Yes, with HSA

Deductible

Higher

Good fit if

You're healthy and want to save for future costs tax-free.

Metal Levels

Bronze to Platinum,

in plain English.

Metal levels show how you and the plan split the cost of care. A lower premium usually means you pay more when you use care, and a higher premium means you pay less.

Bronze · you pay about 40%
Plan ~60%
Silver · you pay about 30%
Plan ~70%
Gold · you pay about 20%
Plan ~80%
Platinum · you pay about 10%
Plan ~90%

Averages across a typical population, not your personal costs. Silver plans are the only ones with extra cost-sharing savings for eligible incomes. Platinum plans aren’t offered everywhere.
